unmarried partners visa

Hello everyone.

I am currently living in the UK with my partner. I've been here for a year and was wondering about the immigration laws on unmarried partners. He is a UK citizen; I'm a US citizen.

I have read through the UK immigration site but it is confusing at best. Does anyone understand the rules for unmarried partners to gain residency? We have no plans to marry and no plans to change our relationship... what do I need to do to become a resident according to UK laws?

I'm self employed as a writer. If that info helps any.
