I am an Expat from New York that has always had dreams of living over seas, as we all do. That is until Bush gave me the final push to put my postcode where my zip code is.
I have been living in London for a little over 2 years now and have gone through 3 types of visa, Workers, HSMP, and Dependent Work Visa and i would like to offer help if you need it.
Here are a few misconceptions:
You do not need to be a rocket scientist, programmer or a world class heart surgeon. There are a few companies that help find different types of visas for just about anyone, BUT, you have to have some type of skill or be sponsored. This can be as simple as a interoffice transfer, student, work exchange or a straight job find.
Students: contact your forgein exchange dept in your collect and find what sister or affiliate programs and contact their register. from this you can get information on colleges who are actively seeing US student to fill forgein quotas. it is a great deal than you think.
Interoffice: find out if your company has a forgein office and get cozy with them. offer to help them out or better yet, push to be their point of contact with your US office. keep an eye on job postings an when u see a posting, here is the easy part, present a proposal for the cost and benefit to give you the job. Contact a company like www.1stcontact.co.uk and ask for costs for a Work visa and the steps involved. the usual cost id only £2K and about 3 weeks work that you will mostly do. you could offer to pay the cost and move yourself. This is pricey, but if you really want to go, then get off your butt and do it.
Marriage/ Dependent: the UK has a ultimate visa called the Highly Skilled Migrant Work Visa (HSMP) which is not attached to a company but to the crown. This is had to get without being a Nobel prize winner, being married see gives you the ability to pull both your skill points to receive this golden visa. The point system is based on, age, education, marriage, skills, and known expertise in your field. The points to qualify are 65 points, but if you are married, you get to pool both your experience. here is the link to the UK visa board for a great deal of info AND a phone number for questions. Calling them was the best way to get your head around the process.
