London Relocation Advice

I received the news today, after only being back in the USA for 9 months. We may be heading to London for my wife's new psoition at her company. Fresh off a stay in France for almost 5 years, I know all will work out okay. I could use some advice or information sources about where to live. We enjoyed living in the city(Paris) before and using mass transit. I am hoping to send the children to the American school in St. John's Wood area and my wife will be commuting to the Tower Hill area. Any advice about the neighborhoods of London would be greatly appreciated. Particularly , advice about the rents, and safety of different areas, would be helpful. We would consider the suburbs or outer areas of London if my wife's commute would be reasonable, but it is difficult to find this out from just looking at a map.
