UK Citizenship Time Approaching

Has anyone applied for citizenship? I am nearly at my five year mark, with 1 full year as permanent resident. do you have any advice on this process? How long did it take for the application to be processed? other than the new test, is there any reason why a law abider with a perfect record would not be granted citizenship...meaning, do they make judgement calls on your "worthiness" or whether they "want you"? i am aware of the need to have character witnesses but it is unclear to me if the whole process is more like getting into university or getting a job (i.e. a perfectly good candidate can fail) rather than just a series of administrative formalities that ensure good character and no problems with the law, taxes, etc.
