Relative merits of each London tube line?

Hello folks,

I am moving from NYC to London in September and have a question for all you experts. My husband and I are trying to figure out where to live. Current contenders are Islington, Clapham, Fulham, Maida Vale, and St. John's Wood. (This is from both people's advice and from searching a million estate agent sites to find places that we like in our price range.)

We will both be working from home at first, so living near a Tube that gets us easily to work is not a criteria in choosing a neighborhood in which to live.

However, we want to be near a Tube that enables us to do the following things with relative ease:

-visit our friends (who are all over the map: Notting Hill, Brixton, Highgate, Kensington)
-get to the West End and other cultural spots to enjoy the city (we're only going to be there for 1-2 years)
-get to and fro places like Paddington/Victoria/King's Cross (and therefore Heathrow and Gatwick) as we will be traveling a lot and having lots of guests
-not break down every second or be packed like sardines every day!

There may be NO place to live that affords us all these wonderful benefits, or no place within our 350 pounds pw budget (for a two bedroom), but I thought I'd ask. And of COURSE I know that which Tube you're on is by far not the only consideration for where one would be happy living, but it's what we're obsessing about today so I thought I'd post about it. :)

To give you some context...if you know NYC, we currently live in the Village within a 5-10 minute walk of the following subway lines (and it is heaven): 1/2/3/9, F/V, N/R/4/5/6, and A/C/E. It's ridiculous how easy it is to get around from here, and we are spoiled (spoilt?) by it. Is there anywhere in London that is affordable that can provide an even vaguely similar level of convenience? (involving a transfer is cool, as is using the bus system)

Thank you, thank you in advance to everyone!
