UK EXPAT PACKAGE REVIEW

I have been asked to Relocate to London on a 2-3 yr assignment with my firm starting in Jan 2007. Just received the details of my package. My base and bonus % will remain the same:

Current Base: $123K (NYC)
Bonus: 20%

In addition, I am to get:
COLA adjustment: GBP 11,500/yr
Housing Allowance GBP 1,700/month
Car Allowance: GBP 500/month
I month Temporary Housing
Tax Equalized

I am concerned that the housing allowance may not be enough to find accomodations suitable for a family of four within short (1/2 hr to 45 min) communting distance of the London Financial district.

Is GBP 1700 enough to cover the monthly rental of a 3 bed house/flat? Should I go back and try to renegotiate, and what would be a reasonable monthly amount?

Any ideas and suggestions would greatly help?

Thanks.
