Banking in the UK

Has anyone had experience setting up a bank account in the UK through one of the global banks (I tried sending this through before with their name but it was rejected)? I'm going to be in the UK for a year -- possibly permanently after that year - and was hoping to open a bank account here before I leave. One of the big banks, which specializes in relocation and global accounts, has an office in DC, so I can set it up there. However, I've heard different things about their customer service. Does anyone have any advice on this? Thanks.
