Considering the UK

I'm currently self-employed here in the States doing technology (Cisco VoIP) training and consulting. I've been thinking about spending some time abroad and what I know of British culture appeals to me.

So here I am starting at square zero. Does anyone have a feel for the demand for persons in my field and how does start the job hunt? Are UK firms generally adverse to bringing in someone from abroad? What obstacles can I expect to encounter?

I've got a good situation now, so fortunately I'm not in a rush. I understand that given the amount of time work visas take to process, that's probably a good thing.

Ideally, I'd like to work in the UK for six months or so and, if it works out well, commit to brining my family over and making it a permanent arrangement.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
