cell phone advice

i have not tried to get a phone yet, as my blackberry from the states still works here, but another American i know who moved here on June 1 tried to get a cell today and was denied due to bad credit. And i thought opening a bank account was quite a process?
We are wives of investment bankers (who have cell phones issued thru work) and are concerned about the process. Any advice?
