duties on artwork

I am a British Citizen living and working in the US, I have a green card. Because I am trying to keep my options open, at least, and to make it more financially viable when I return home, I have started exhibiting and selling my paintings in the UK. However, I just got totally stung by duties on a recent shipment and am wondering if anyone has advice regarding this. My feeling is that if I am going to end up paying national insurance and tax on these sales in the UK, I shouldn't have to pay duty. Also, the paintings are on consignment and don't necessarily sell.

Does anyone have any brilliant suggestions regarding this matter. Thanks.
