London neighborhood convenient for commute

I am moving to London in January and will be working in Harlow (essex) but am determined to live in London. I'm struggling with finding a decent place to live (budget is about 2200 pounds/mo) in a decent neighborhood where the commute will be no more than 1 hour. I am a single woman and the few people I know live in west london. However, Harlow is north, on the eastern side, so living East would be an easier commute. Anyone have any comments about Shoreditch or Spitalfields (train leaves from Liverpool St)? I am concerned about feeling isolated there. I hear it's very artsy but I wouldn't say I'm very artsy!
