NYC v London Neighborhoods

Hello! I reached out to the forum a few months ago and very much appreciate everyone's help in evaluating my expat package.

I've made the decision to move and will be in London by the end of the month. I have corporate housing for two weeks but am anxious to find a place. I was hoping that someone here has made a move from NYC to London recently and could advise on some neighborhoods.

Right now I live in the Gramercy/Union Square area and frequently hang out around there and in Soho/NoLita and E Village. My budget in London is approx 350 - 400 GBP per week and I only need a one bedroom. My goal would be a neighborhood where I could walk to shopping (grocery and books, clothing etc) and bars/restaurants and be within a 30 to 40 min commute to the city (Victoria Embankment).

Any suggestions on an appropriate neighborhood would be much appreciated? Colleagues have suggested Fulham or South Kensington. Fulham seems ok but I'm concerned South Ken would be too much like the UES (family oriented, very expensive etc). Any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers,
Megan
