Schools for Kids in UK

My husband has just accepted a job offer in London. He is going ahead of us, but I have no idea about the school application process there. I have a 2nd and a 4th grader, and they will be going to public (us) which I think is local school system there. I understand the levels, primary, secondary, etc, but not much else and am having a difficult time finding resources online. Any comments would be appreciated. IE how to apply, what they need to attend, good areas to attend/where to avoid, etc. My children are also in a language immersion program here in the states. They are both fluent in French, but I am not sure about their level in English (how ironic:) Do they have special language schools there too?
