UK Cost of Living for US DOD Employee

My wife & I are going to transfer from our US DOD jobs in Germany (US DOD school) to another DOD site (world wide). We are developing our location preferences and are concerned at the "horror stories" about the high cost of living in the UK. DOD schools in UK are not in the London area and we would probably be living off base.

We would appreciate any information or advice on this issue.
