Help needed! American to UK. Work Permit

Here is the deal - I am an American who is considering a management consulting job with a company based in London.
The company is quite small and is not willing to go through the process of securing a work permit for me.
They told me that if I can make myself eligible, then I can be hired.

I am not sure if the HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Program) is for me.

Can someone please tell me what my options are?
