Applying for British citizenship through an embassy?

Hello all,

I'm an American married to a Brit and I've got ILR. There is a chance that we may re-locate to the UK if my husband gets a job/greencard. What I'm wondering is - do I have to stay in the UK while my citizenship application is being processed or can I wait and do it through a British embassy in the U.S.?

The turnaround time right now is about 6 months and this is a bit long. I can only leave the UK for 2 years on an ILR; then I would have to start all over again with spousal visa, etc.

Any advice? Many thanks!
