UK credit card necessary for 6-month stay?

We are moving to the UK for a 6 month extended business trip.

Do we need to open a UK credit card? If we don't, are US Visa and Mastercards widely accepted?

Our employer will pay any banking fees we'd incur by using our US cards in the UK, so that cost isn't an issue. They will also pay for any items requiring a UK credit history directly (i.e. rent, utilities, etc). I'm more concerned about running into situations where our US cards wouldn't be accepted.

Also, we will be traveling throughout Europe on weekends. Is there any reason a UK credit card would be more beneficial than a US one in this situation?
