working for us company in uk

Hi, my wife is attending Queens University in Belfast. I am joining her there with a student dependant visa that will allow me to work. my current company in the US wants to be able to keep me as an employee and let me work remotely. Our company is global and has several UK offices. Does anyone know of potential problems of being on a US payroll but working from home in the UK?

it actually seems more logical to me to transfer me to a UK office, then assign me to work on the US project that i have been working on for years.

any help/advice would be appreciated.
