Spending a few years in England

My husband and I will be retiring in 5 years. How hard is to get a visa to stay in the UK for a 2 to 5 year stay? Is it easier for retired people to get a long term visa? Renting looks fairly straightforward. Is buying a home another story? Can anyone provide links to sepcific info regarding extended stays? Thanks!
