Moving to Eastbourne UK in December 2010

Significant Other who is a UK citizen and I are talking marriage and I am looking at applying for a visa as an unmarried partner. If I turn my visa application in by August 1st, is it reasonable to expect a response by December 1st?

Is it worth it to use a VISA processing company? Any suggestions for someone in the upper midwest?
