US Contractor to Work in the UK

Hello,
I'm a US citizen, self-employed contractor, and planning to do consulting work for a UK-based business. Does anyone have experience in this area? If so, I'd greatly welcome your input. Did you have to acquire a 'Business Visitor Visa,' for example, & how long did the visa process take? (I've read through the UKBA site, but would welcome your experience-based response.) Did you require an accountant to assist in filing your US tax returns, or did you complete them yourself?
