I currently reside in Tampa, FL and am talking with a company currently about a leadership opportunity in Birmingham. As this is a big move for us, I do have some questions that will help us decide better if this move would be the right decision for our family. A little bit more about our family - We have a 3 year old, own a house, have two dogs and my spouse is employed. I have no credit card debt and my spouse has a small amount in credit card debt. We both own cars that we will need to sell if we make this move and most likely take a hit of $6-$8K combined. I have always wanted to do a work assignment abroad and my spouse is open and excited about this opportunity.
Below are my questions:
1) My current compensation is a base of $150K with an annualized bonus of $50K. The position I am interviewing for would be a step up, but is the same exact industry. Keeping the cost of living in Birmingham, taxes in the U.K etc in mind what percentage of a raise should I be working towards?
2) How is the public school system in the U.K? If we have to go down the path of private schooling approximately how much would it cost on an annualized basis?
3) Does Birmingham have a big expat community?
4) Approximately how long does the whole visa process take?
5) What are some other questions I should be asking or researching?
