Spousal Visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain

Hi fellow expats, I wonder if anyone has recently gone through the process of applying for their Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK? I currently have a spousal visa which is valid until November. I have found the application form and list of supporting documents needed online, but would like to know when I can actually submit my application?! Strangely, the spousal visa should be 2 years, however I seem to have an 3 additional months according to the actual date that appears on the paper copy of my visa. I'm not sure if this therefore allows you a 3 month window to start and complete the application process? Many thanks for any help!
