How to find Rented Apartment

Hi,
Looking for house to rent for me and my 12 year old daughter in Sheffield. Initially a one bedroom or studio set will work. I have gone through some of the websites but I am unable to take decision as most of the houses are shared(that are in my budget).
My preference is to rent a house which will have good Secondary Schools nearby, so that my daughter could walk to the school. However, I can travel either by bus or tram. My workplace is Sheffield Hallam University. I will be coming in mid July. My budget is GBP 500.
If you could suggest me how to narrow down and finally find the house.
