I am just getting started in my 40's, single and no kids, U.S. man with lots of travel experience. But haven't been to Uruguay. Been travelling every year now since 2010.
Not interested in residency. I gave up on that dream and have a good thing and investements going in USA that lets me live in USA 6 months in the summer and 6 months wandering or wherever tropical during the northern hemisphere winter.
I know enough to see that Uruguay would have summer time going when i leave the US for the winter.
I lasted 4 months in Peru and sampled Ecuador from there. Lived a year in Nicaragua and sampled Honduras ,Costa Rica and panama from there.
Lived in Arizona long ago close to mexico border and sampled mexico often as well as Guatemala and belize.
Stayed almost 2 years in philippines(never again) and sampled Thailand(a must return to destination even if just to eat the food options there).
Anyway, thats how i came to the conclusion i won't be a full time expat. I Didn't always enjoy my stay in a lot of those places. I can afford to live in USA and maintain investment/business that will grow my income over time to be even better off when I am at real retirement age. I plan on not retiring, just keep loose and easy work and enough down time and income to be gone wherever for 6 months of US winter. Extended vacations instead of retiring. Working for myself. I will quit when my body and mind quit..
So. Uruguay doesnt seem like peru where i could just show up and get a decent hotel room all to myself in a beach town for $250 a month. I know internet is usually the pricey listing view, but i did see that places like Punta del diablo up north is a small and cheap place and i saw video to see the state of the place. Its ok but it worried me that only one ATM showed in town and sounds like i would have to stash cash to hold me over for a week and have to take trips out of town some weeks if the ATM fails to serve the day i need it. And wondering if such a town is right for having a week's worth of cash on me most of the time? I am flexible so long as i feel safe and healthy . I have stayed in Africa where water and electricity are a rare treat even in mansions with a new BMW parked in the garage is no guarantee of water or electricity supply. Bathed out of buckets in the dark and drew water out of wells often.
Piriapolis looks interesting but not sure what month to month lodging cost there and I don't mean hostel bunks, but a room to myself if not a small apartment month to month to myself.
Punta del Diablo looks interesting and seems like its reasonable to expect to find a month to month place for $300-$400.
I am simple and can manage cheap places as long as its not a dump or cheating me out of basic humanity. I can go to Nicaragua and get that for $50 or less a month.
If i have to pay more than $400 to get a room or small apartment all to myself on a month to month basis, then i am experienced enough to know better options around the world, but i am interested in Uruguay because its new to me ,small ,easy going, a clean air destination for my sensitive breathing and would make an easy visit to Argentina and brazil while there. I like to make visits to neighboring countries when i pick a place. I was in West Africa last winter and did a trip by bus across 5 countries in the region. 23 countries so far and i dont plan to see all (never will China) but i would like to see many more.
Any way, thanks and i like, if you could, info with detailed prices per location for lodging on a month to month basis because i will likely stay a month or 2 only in any one town, to get a feel for what i would miss out on otherwise.
Just hoping its not difficult to get a decent $400 or less ~room or apartment to myself. I like to save money to pay travel cost and save as much of my income as i can towards growing business when i get back to the US.
Great part about travelling extended stay in cheaper places, easier to save more travelling than if i stayed at home or stowed away in florida for the winter. Leave the car behind for no cost of gasoline and other bills from USA cost of living.
PS, I'm not a real orfin but have been to the orphanage before and swore solidarity with all orfins around the world.
Thanks whoever.
