Living in Uruguay without a car

What are your experiences living in Uruguay without owning a car?

Can one practically take the bus for grocery shopping for a family of five? If so, how do you do it? For this situation, let's say we live 10km from the closest shops just outside Maldonado fairly close to the highway.

Any other suggestions to circumvent car ownership?
