I am lucky that I have a job where I can work from home from anywhere in the world so long as it has decent Internet, and it pays really good money.
I am a British citizen and for the last nearly 9 years I have been living in Mexico. I have a Mexican wife and an 8 year old dual-nationality son.
Thanks to my wife's insistence, I am fluent in Spanish, though it is Mexican (tu and usted) not South American (vos). My son is bilingual.
I am seriously considering moving to Uruguay in July for a variety of positive reasons as follows.
1. My understanding is that Uruguay doesn't charge income tax on foreign-source earned income which means that, as the UK also doesn't charge income tax when you reside overseas, I'd be able to receive my entire income tax free.
2. There are no earthquakes in Uruguay; I got hit by the September 2017 one here and didn't like it.
3. House prices are reasonable, similar to Mexico, and I can expect to buy a decent home from the proceeds of selling my London flat.
4. Bilingual education is available for my son.
5. There is no air pollution unlike Mexico City.
6. Houses have heating for the winter unlike Mexico City.
And I understand the following potential negative already:
5. Cars, electrical & white goods cost a fortune because of import taxes. I hope to offset that with tax savings :)
So to those of you living there long term, what other factors should I be considering? Are there other negatives I haven't considered?
