Being Vegan in Uruguay

Having once been Vegan I get asked by friends how is Uruguay which is known for its meat, for Vegans. Well honestly when I got here 12 years ago it was impossible! You could barely find tofu and the vegetables all looked unappetizing. But since I wasnt vegan for some moral issue I went back to eating meat and the meat is wonderful here. But… wanting to start eating a more plant based diet I went looking for ingredients and found that while not in most markets there are lots of ingredients and spices that weren’t available before. Made a wonderful Chana Masala or curry chickpea stew the other day.

So while the famous Anthony Bourdain quote “in Uruguay chicken is considered a vegetable” is still mostly true you can survive at least on a plant based diet. Especially grateful that frozen cauliflower rice is regularly available in the freezer section of my nearby Tienda Inglesa. As fresh cauliflower isn’t always.

So life in Uruguay as an expat keeps improving!
