Moving to HCMC in July '10

My wife and I recently got a teaching job at a new international school in district 1. There are several high rise apartment buildings in the same complex, but we want to make sure we make the right choice for where we live. The rent is $1,100 which seems a little high.
We would love a little advice on which areas are close and where to look and where to avoid as we won't have cars.
