Current situation on long visas for Vietnam

Does anyone know the up-to-date situation regarding being able to get a 6 months or 12 months visa to stay in Vietnam? I remember at one time people were able to get them in Sihanoukville but now I see a warning from the Australian government, saying that some agencies that purport to provide these visas are scammers.
