Expat Employment Query

Hi there.

I’m new to this forum, so this is my first post. Basically, any feedback from people in the know – in relation to the topic at hand - would be hugely appreciated. I do conduct my own research as much as possible online (and via guidebooks and the like), but there’s nothing quite like getting it straight from those in situ.

I was planning to be in Vietnam by now – with a view to being there for the foreseeable. The idea was to enter on a three month visa (as a UK citizen) and rent lodgings once over there, with Hoi An being my chosen destination. Obviously, visa runs/renewals would need to follow thereafter. I’ve been previously, but that was way back in 2002; subsequently, I’ve heard Vietnam has changed a hell of a lot since!

My work/money situation has delayed this however; being a freelance copywriter/editor, my working relationship with the person who was my main client came to a grinding halt due to his continual failure to pay me. I was hoping to pick up more work to make up that slack in the meantime and arrive in Vietnam with a nice financial cushion and plenty of existing freelance opportunities to allow me to hit the ground running.

That hasn’t really materialised though, so I’m now wondering whether to simply get over there and continue ploughing away online via the usual freelance platforms (as I’ve been doing) whilst simultaneously looking for supplementary incomes in Vietnam itself.

My main query is therefore; are there many employment opportunities for foreigners aside from teaching? As I’d be on a tourist visa, I’m assuming I couldn’t work legally, unless applying for a different visa in situ.

I might be clutching at straws, but I suppose I’m hoping that expat business owners might need fluent English speaking workers for casual work here and there. So, if anyone on here could shed some light – or indeed point me in the direction of any particular organisation to approach – I’d be very grateful.

I hope that didn’t sound too vague anyway!

Thanks for reading.
