Ease of living in Haiphong as an expat

It's been quite a while since I've spent time in Vietnam. As I remember it, most guys had either viet wives or long term girlfriends. Their wives took care of all the day to day things, which made it a lot easier on them, due to language barrier and cultural differences and the like. Is it still this way. Is it difficult to pull it off on your own without a local wife?
