Cistern water ... does it need treatment for hshld use?

Thinking about a rental that has a rain water cistern. On the internet, it states that cistern water does have NON pathological bacteria (non-disease carrying) and it is typically harder water because there is dust/dirt particles.

Soooo, do you still need to treat the water before using for general hshld purposes? For example, on internet I found one couple did "shock treatment" once a month (same as in a swimming pool.)

Anyone knowledgeable?
