have pet will travel...

Our family is preparing for an extended t trip to Nicaragua in March. We plan on staying at least a couple of months, and are considering a permanent move. My question: What are the issues surrounding travel with a pet? Specifically a 26 pound cocka-poo? We were going to leave him with family and retrieve him later if the move becomes permanent, but are hating the thought of leaving him. Any thoughts, or considerations?
