Renewing retirement visa

From what I understand the retirement visa has to be renewed every 5 years.

Is that automatic with just paying a fee or do you have to go through the approval process each time.

The reason I'm wondering is that 10 years from now I don't want to be in a situation where requirements dramatically change and I no longer qualify.
