Visa Run to CR

Thinking that by getting out of the country to the north (Honduras/El Salvador) my wife and I would get an extra 90 days extension on our visa. Instead we had to pay a fine upon returning from El Salvador and Nicaragua as we were explained we had to travel to Mexico or CR to get the stamp with the 90 day extencion.

Does anyone knows how going to CR works.? I am driving to CR to do that but I would like to know how long do I have to stay? how big is the citation to get 90 days and is there a prefer time to go in and com back?
