Liberia to Nicaragua

I’m planning to fly in and out of Liberia, CR and take taxis and/or buses in and out of Nicaragua. Is Nicaraguan border control likely to want to see that I have a ticket of some sort to leave Nicaragua? If so what is the best way to satisfy that requirement?
Also, what is a reasonable way to get from Liberia to the border and then from the border to Matagalpa? I’m going to arrive in Liberia on a Sunday afternoon but figure I should probably spend the night somewhere convenient and head for the border Monday morning. I don’t know how long the crossing is likely to take and prefer to travel during the day.
