Traveling to Croatia

Two questions to post here.
I am a biology teacher at an international school and will be traveling to Croatia this summer to scout out a potential place for retiring.
Q 1 . Any suggestions about places that are welcoming to US expats or any places where expats seem to congregate?
Q 2. I will be in Zagreb and Rijeka on my visit. Any suggestions on things to do/see while I am in these locations?
Any other advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
