I'm going to be moving to St. Lucia and working in Castries, living in Grande Riviere. I understand that it is distance of about 7/8 kms.
I am a crazy mad keen cyclist, I ride 25 kms to and from work every day along a state highway full of trucks, it doesn't stop me! I can't imagine life without a bicycle. I do all my grocery shopping on my bike, regularly go on cycle tours, work as a volunteer bike mechanic, and was literally "Miss May" with my bicycle for the Wellington Regional council's 2015 calendar.
My question is - will I be able to bike to work? Mountain biking seems like a popular tourist activity but I want to commute by bicycle.
Yes I know people will think I am crazy but I am committed to cycling.
If so, what is my best option:
-Bring my not fancy but very solid and loved old steel frame road bike as excess oversize baggage (I might only have to pay $100, or have to pay $100 for each stop, which is quite a few from New Zealand, it depends on the airline and I will need to investigate)
-Get a similar old-school steel frame bicycle on Craigslist and have my mom bring it with her as excess baggage from the States when she comes to visit (or find some one to be my bike-mule!)
-Buy a bike in St. Lucia, 2nd hand or new
Some important things:
- I don't really like mountain biking and would prefer a road bike with hybrid wheels that can handle a bit of off-road (which is what I have now) if that will be useful to me on St. Lucia's roads
- I don't really want or need a fancy new racing road bike and don't have the money for that
