Renting before buying

My wife and I have heard that it is always best to rent first before purchasing a home there, which we plan to live there permanently. Our issue is that we have 3 cats that we have raised since they were 4 weeks old (my wife's friend was trying to get rid of the litter before they got weaned because she wanted to go on a vacation). How difficult will it be to find a home for rent there that will accept animals? Our preference would be a home instead of an apartment or condo/townhome.
