Tocumen to Casco Viejo

I'll be flying from Colombia to US in a few months. I use to take this route via COPA before Covid hit. There is a 12 hour layover in Panama city. The few times I've flown this route, I hired a taxi to take me around the city for 9 hours and back to the airport. Got to see pretty much everything in the few trips I've made. Cost me about $100-120 for the taxi and felt it was well worth it.

Now that I have another trip (looking at late january), and have pretty much seen everything, this next trip I don't want to sit in the airport for another 12 hours. I'd like to take a train or bus to the old city, and just hang out, grab lunch, a few drinks, then head back.

I think I saw a taxi would be $30 from airport to Casco Viejo. Train/subway was, I think, $1...but had to walk 1 km from airport, then another km to casco viejo. I didn't know if this would be safe to do so (I live in Colombia...so know how to get around). I would just have a backpack, no suitcase. In fact, if there are lockers in the airport, I would prefer to leave the backpack there as well.

Any other recommended methods to get to the old city from the airport? Best option?
