Border run

Hello, thank you for all the rich information in this forum! I am on my first border run - back in the US visitig my daughters. (Lived here 26 years but am originally from Brazil and being between the Americas is just right for me right now.) On Memorial Day I return to CR and need to have a border run plan for late August. I see some great suggestions (like from designguru) but wondering if you have any specific advice for the least expensive trip out from San Jose. If with hotel it turns out to be $400 or $500+ I might as well make another trip to the US to a place where I can stay with family and friends, paying for a flight instead of hotel.

Any advice on how do this most inexpensively (and safely - I'm 55 and traveling alone - from SJ?

Also was curious about designguru writing that he stays one overnight (designguru, I tried messaging privately, but this feature seems not to be available today.) I was under the impression that I needed to stay out of the country 3 days. Is one night really enough? That would decrease the border run considerably, for sure.
