Self-Employed Visa

Has anyone had experience of applying for a Self-Employed Visa? We're in the process of buying a house near Greve, I'm past retirement age but want to be able to do some consultancy work, writing etc. which is not possible with the Elective Resident Visa. Any advice welcome!
