Cost of living in a nutshell

When I look these things up I am always greeted with price comparisons. I guess my real question is given how much is provided through the govt with healthcare and public services do these things cancel each other out or potentially even provide a chance at savings. For instance we fall in about 14% for our tax bracket, add company provided insurance and there is another 10% of my check, plus child care another 10%, bringing my take home being much closer to 65% or lower on average.
