Gangs situation

Have lived both in Antigua and Guatemala City for 1 1/2 years about 10 years ago. Last visited 2 years ago. Considering moving back in November. I never worried too much about crime there but my soon-to-be-ex Guatemalan wife now says the gang crime is very bad now. Any comments? (p.s. never bring your Guatemalan wife to the states to live--they turn into gringas muy rapido.)
