Right to claim Jamaican citizenship through parent?

Does anyone know from first-hand experience anything on this: If you have at least one parent who was born on Jamaica does this provide you as their son or daughter with a right to claim Jamaican citizenship? Also, supposing that one parent who was born on Jamaica, also died before independence in 1962 - what about that and how does that affect anything? Thanks anyone.
