Moving to Portugal

Hi everyone we are two brits hoping to retire in Portugal soon. Starting by renting. We are looking at Central Portugal Beja or Tomar and that area. We love Portugese history and fancy buying near a large town or city that reflects this. But we want it outside the busy area if we can.
Any recommendations for semi rural areas?
