I am a USA citizen. About 2015, the Portuguese government extended the offer of citizenship to the grandchildren of Portuguese emigrants. All of my grandparents emigrated from Portugal to the USA. It took some time for the government to publish the actual rules.
I am contemplating taking them up on the offer, which would give me dual Portuguese-USA citizenship.
Has anyone here done this? Good idea, waste of time, what to watch out for, wondering about other's experience.
Moving to Portugal for retirement only a pipe dream right now, but a possibility. My main thought is the dual citizenship would help my kids. I would imagine if I had the citizenship, my USA-born children could apply if they chose. I would think that would open up opportunities for education or work in the EU, should they ever want to pursue such an opportunity.
