visa for a american spouse

I have a American passport and my husband has a Norwegian passport. If we want to retire in Portugal would it be easier for me because my husband is a Norwegian. I know that I need a criminal back ground check done in the U.S. Do any of you know if there is any other document or paper work that I need to take with me to Portugal before I apply for residency permit.
