Parking in Montevideo

I'm going to stay in Punta Carettas and have heard that there are parking attendants in the city who "assist" you by directing you when you're pulling in or out of parking spots. And that these attendants expect some type of tip. Is this true? If so, what is an acceptable amount? What if I don't pay it? (I recall something like that in Puglia, although he was just a homeless guy and we refused to give him anything. Nothing happened to our car.)
